MENTAL ASLYUMS
In the early 1800’s people believe that someone who was mentally ill or a lunatic was caused by a baby being born or sleeping under a full moon. They also thought that they were possessed by the devil or that they were pretending to be senseless animals. People believed that the mentally ill could be cured by cathartic medical treatment. Doctors would also give the mentally insane baths in ice until they couldn't feel anything or give them massive brain shock.
Before mental asylums were invented the mentally insane suffered a lot from the american society. People would chain the insane down to a bed or lock them in a cage where they would be treated like animals. They would be put in a straight jacket and have heavy leg and arm chains. In the early 1900’s Europeans invented a new treatment for mental illness called Moral Management where they would try to steer the insane in the right path by blaming them for being insane.
